As we usher in the Year of the Monkey, Lian Hua Primary School prepared a series of joyous events to celebrate Chinese New Year. Decorations were put up around the school and Chinese New Year songs were sung before morning assemblies. Indeed, the festive atmosphere of Chinese New Year was already hyped up weeks before the day itself!
On the 5th of February, 2016, the school finally came together for the official Chinese New Year celebrations. Game booths such as “Traditional Paper Cutting” and “Know Your Chinese Traditions” were set up for pupils to play and learn at each of the 3 recesses.
As the school gathered for the Chinese New Year concert in the afternoon, many Lian Hua pupils and teachers smiled with glee as they lit up the school hall in their traditional Chinese costumes. Throughout the concert, thunderous applause followed each enriching performance as the school reveled in items like “The Story of the 12 Zodiac Animals” and “The Characteristics of Zodiac Animals”.
The moment of magic came when the school welcomed the Singapore Chinese Arts Centre on stage as they spiced up the concert with the opera performance titled “The Monkey King”.
Finally, the concert concluded with the annual Chinese New Year medley singing led by teachers of different ethnic groups. As if the school was not already pumped up enough for Chinese New Year by then, our own P1 pupil suddenly pranced on stage with his Mini Lion Dance performance! The petite Primary One boy stirred the entire school into a euphoric frenzy as the concert ended on a high with teachers and pupils wishing each other “Gong Xi! Gong Xi!” with clasped hands and joy-filled laughter.
